From Waste to Wonder
Workshops
BioToy Lab
Four-part program where we collect, design & make
Service Description
This creative and educational workshop series is designed for students for secondary, high school and bachelor's/masters. PART 1 – Gathering Materials Participants learn where raw materials come from, particularly coffee grounds as a biobased waste material. After an introduction, they go on a mission to collect used coffee grounds and dry them. This sets the foundation for the next steps in the toy production process. PART 2 – Making Molds for Toys In this workshop, participants learn how to design their own toy molds. They begin by sketching ideas, then move on to 3D software to create a digital design. Finally, they use a 3D printer to turn their mold into a physical object. In doing so, they explore the basics of 3D design and digital fabrication. PART 3 – Making Toys Here, students get hands-on with making toys. They learn how to create a biodegradable material in a six-step process and use molds, cookie cutters and a hydraulic press to shape their toy creations. Everything made is carefully dried in preparation for the next step. PART 4 – Modifying Toys In this session, participants personalize their self-made toys. After a brief explanation and demonstrations of various modification techniques, they use tools and craft materials to adapt their creations. This is where the toys begin to reflect each student’s unique character. We finish the program with a group reflection on the experience, the process, the environmental benefits of biobased materials and sustainable future actions.
